Old Wisdom from The Call

The other day, I ran into a fine fellow at the VFW who still listens to The Call,  a band from the 1980's who are now sadly overlooked. Meeting folks who share my eccentricities in music is one of my greatest joys.

Don't worry, I won't write one of my essays. I just think it my duty to occasionally point out such gems, so that others might perhaps share in the joy and keep the fire burning. . . .

Now you can take both of these songs as being about romantic love if you wish, or you can, as I eventually did, take them to be about something so much more.

The Call, "Everywhere I Go" from Reconciled (1986)

Raise me up
Keep that promise that you made
Wake me up
Keep that promise that you made

I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
I look for you
(Everywhere I go)
I need you
(Everywhere I, everywhere I go)

Straight paths curve
Smiles, eyes, powers to confound me
I lose my nerve
Your voice, it echoes all around me

I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
I look for you everywhere
(Everywhere I go)
I must have you
(Everywhere I, everywhere I, everywhere I go)

Ease me down
Keep that promise that you made to me
Take my hand
My mind reels, all my senses rise

I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
Lord, I think of you
(Everywhere I go)
I look for you
(Everywhere I go)
I need you
(Everywhere I go)
Lord, I need you everywhere I go
(Everywhere I go)
I look for you everywhere
(Everywhere I go)
I need you
(Everywhere I go)
I must have you
(Everywhere I, everywhere I, everywhere I, everywhere I)
Everywhere I go, go

The Call, "I Still Believe (Great Design)" from Reconciled (1986)

Bring it up as we go along . . .

I've been in a cave for forty days
Only a spark to light my way
I wanna give out, I wanna give in
This is our crime
This is our sin
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the pain and through the grief
Through the lives, through the storms
Through the cries and through the wars

Oh, I still believe

I'm flat on my back out at sea
Hoping these waves don't cover me
I'm turned and tossed upon the waves
When the darkness comes, I feel the grave
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the cold and through the heat
Through the rain and through the tears
Through the crowds and through the cheers

Oh, I still believe

I'll march this road, I'll climb this hill
Upon my knees if I have to
I'll take my place up on this stage
I'll wait till the end of time for you like everybody else

I'm out on my own walking the streets
Look at the faces that I meet
I feel like I, like I want to go home
What do I feel?
What do I know?
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the shame and through the grief
Through the heartache, through the tears
Through the waiting, through the years
For people like us in places like this
We need all the hope that we can get

Oh, I still believe
