Allegory of Vices and Virtues

Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Allegory of Vices and Virtues (c. 1870)

In a shift from the more traditional depictions of the virtues and the vices, Lefebvre here offers a different set of symbols to reflect the moral struggle of a young man.

On the left are Venus and her followers, luring him with the promises of lust, drink, music, and dance.

On the right are Glory, Silence, Victory, and Piety, proposing another path of life.

We don't see his face, but he still seems confused. We all have our own variations.
