    1. I'm not saying that in a catty way, btw. It's genuinely interesting; I wonder if the artist was trying to say something about the nature of those sins by portraying them that way.

      The "classical" distinction and complementarity of the masculine and the feminine are now almost completely lost to our culture. As soon as we think of the relationship as a war, all is lost.

      You will very rarely find the Virtues represented as male, though in the previous post Mars stands in for Fortitude, There is a reason for this, but I imagine you already understand it.

      Justitia, of course, is a woman ,and always will be.

      In this painting, the two Sins represented as male are Wrath and Gluttony. One might move Lust over as well, but it could go either way, as ultimately they all could.

      In the end, the humanity is the issue, not the gender.

    3. Humanity is the issue, but that doesn't mean gender is meaningless. Even now.
