Epictetus, Golden Sayings 146


If you have put malice and evil speaking from you, altogether, or in some degree: if you have put away from you rashness, foulness of tongue, intemperance, sluggishness: if you are not moved by what once moved you, or in like manner as you once were moved—then you may celebrate a daily festival, today because you have done well in this manner, tomorrow in that. How much greater cause is here for offering sacrifice, than if a man should become Consul or Prefect?
