Building upon many years of privately shared thoughts on the real benefits of Stoic Philosophy, Liam Milburn eventually published a selection of Stoic passages that had helped him to live well. They were accompanied by some of his own personal reflections. This blog hopes to continue his mission of encouraging the wisdom of Stoicism in the exercise of everyday life. All the reflections are taken from his notes, from late 1992 to early 2017.

No-Man, "Shell of a Fighter"
A song that a "loser" will understand. A "winner" will find it ridiculous.
Look into your heart. Then recognize that losing and winning were not at all what you thought they were.
Some will suffer mightily, while some will coast through life. Some despair about their fate, while others laugh at those who despair.
Who benefits from any of it? Only those who stick to a conscience.
I once thought that the "you" in this song could be about a lost love. I now see that the "You" in this song could also be about God.
It isn't wasted. A life that feels lost is not lost at all. Give out what no one will give to you. Offer love when no one will love you. Expect nothing, share all.
Still, it hurts so darn much as I go along that road. I get so tired.

I dream of changes
I change my dreams
I feel so restless
sometimes I get so mean
why should I bother
finding the will
when every movement I make
just seems like I'm standing still?
the shell of a fighter
the shell of a man
the weight of a lifetime
waiting for your healing hands
and still I rise
and still I dream
and still I feel
and I wait
the shell of a fighter
the shell of a man
the weight of a lifetime
waiting for your healing hands
why don't you hold me
when I need you to?
why don't you touch me
when I reach for you?
why don't you hurt for me
like I do for you?
why don't you dream of me
dream like I'm dreaming of you?
the shell of a fighter
and still I rise
and still I dream
and still I feel
and I wait
the shell of a fighter
