Epictetus, Golden Sayings 91


Can you judge men? . . . then make us imitators of yourself, as Socrates did. 

Do this, do not do that, or else I will cast you into prison; this is not governing men like reasonable creatures. 

Say rather, As God has ordained, so do; or else you will suffer chastisement and loss. 

Do you ask what loss? None other than this: To have left undone what you should have done, to have lost the faithfulness, the reverence, the modesty that is in you! Greater loss than this seek not to find!
